AHPI’s Contribution and Involvement in Health & Climate Change

AHPI has a dedicated group on Health & Climate Change headed By Dr Alexander Thomas, Chairman, Dr CM Bhagat and Ms Divya Alexander as members of the group

AHPI through its various publications, symposiums and advocacy with government have tried to contribute in improving health of fellow countrymen and overcome challenges faced by Climate Change.

AHPI’s book on Climate Change and the Health Sector: Healing the World presents a deep insight to two very critical issues of society. The book have presented the most critical issues of the day in such a lucid manner that make it an interesting reading even for a common reader. The book, published by Routledge, is available to download for free (open access) at: https://doi.org/10.4324/9781003190516

AHPI with its initiatives have tried to show how the health sector has emerged as a leader in the fight against climate change and explores the role of the health system in climate policy action. It delivers the stakeholders an overview of the linkages between climate change and the health sector. The publication also shows the impact of climate change on health, its connection to pandemics, and its effects on food, nutrition and air quality.

AHPI is working in operational aspect of the healthcare sector on climate-smart to reduce its overall carbon footprint by looking at sustainable procurement along with resilient infrastructure, adequate management of water, energy, waste, chemicals and plastics in healthcare.

AHPI believes that environmentally sustainable hospitals can also help in lowering the cost of healthcare delivery. This happens as hospitals are encouraged to practice energy saving measures that include electricity, water, gases and other consumable, by adopting of environmentally friendly processes, eliminating unnecessary purchases, choosing environmentally friendly agents/re-agents, recycling etc. All such aspects are addressed within the standard published by AHPI- Green and Clean Hospitals.

The standard has been developed by the experts from hospital administration, pollution control boards and environment management systems. The standard covers all the processes; clinical as well as non-clinical and requires hospital to undertake regular waste management audit.

Cleanliness is integral part of being green and it plays key role in hospital safety through infection control. It is in this respect that certain important aspects of cleanliness have been integrated with green concepts and standard has so been named as GREEN & CLEAN HOSPITAL.

AHPI every year recognizes the efforts put in by Hospitals in order to reduce carbon footprints and adopting various green and clean measures in its annual healthcare excellence awards.

Some of the AHPI’s involvement in Countering Climate change are as follows:
